LONELINESS IS A HEALTH RISK FOR SENIORS

Social and psychological disconnection in seniors is a major public health risk that affects a large number of Australians and put them at risk for memory loss and other serious health issues.

Loss of social isolation is more common in older adults owing to circumstances such as residing alone, the loss of friends or family members, chronic conditions, and hearing impairment.

Loneliness is the emotional state of being alone, despite how much social contact one has. An absence of interpersonal connections is referred to as social isolation. Some people experience loneliness as a result of social isolation, while others experience loneliness without even being socially isolated.

Loneliness Poses Health Risks

Although it is difficult to quantify social isolation and loneliness, there is compelling evidence that many adults aged 50 and up are isolated and lonely in ways that jeopardise their health.

Statistics shows:

-       Poor social relationships in seniors are linked to a 29% higher risk of heart disease and a 32% higher risk of stroke. It is linked to increased levels of psychological distress, anxiety, and suicide.

-       Loneliness is linked to a nearly fourfold higher likelihood of death, a 68% higher danger of hospitalization, and a 57% increased risk of visits to the ER in heart failure patients.

Health Consequences

Loneliness can have a negative impact on one's physical health in a variety of ways. Secluded seniors are more likely to develop serious illnesses such as chronic pulmonary disease, arthritis, and decreased mobility. As a means of coping with loneliness, seniors may participate in other unhealthy habits such as excessive alcohol consumption, binge eating, and smoking. Seniors who are lonely may devote more time inside and avoid physical exercise. This lack of physical activity can increase a person's risk of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and other problems.
